Not a great deal is known of when the Vulcan brand started in Australia. Vulcan was best known in Australia through the 1960’s as an oil heater manufacturer but in 1980 following an acquisition started making dishwashers – the famous Vulcan Dishlex. In the Vulcan stable were also water heaters, manufactured in Melbourne. The Australian Financial Review reported that Rheem Australia purchased Vulcan from Australian Consolidated Industries in 1984, and thus begun another brand in Rheem Australia’s armoury.
Vulcan developed an all new gas hot-water heater, called the Freeloader, which significantly cut hot water bills and heat losses by eliminating the conventional flue. The Freeloader became the market leader in high efficiency gas hot-water heating, with world patents on the design.
Today Vulcan Gas & Electric water heaters are all made in Rheem owned and operated factories and Vulcan remains a significant brand in Rheem’s water heating portfolio.
